Michal believes in helping women through film... Is he a fool?Filmy dla Kobiet poster

When I first walked into the Vagina Cafe, I was pleased that somebody had taken the time and the risk to put the principle of female empowerment ahead of everything else. I want to honor that. I want to support it and to help it spread by helping others learn how to listen.Pointer

By teaching myself to listen to women, I'd like to give everyone a chance to become a better listener.

I've decided to export fine art handcrafted by women in Poland to America. High quality handcrafted art produced by high quality women deserves to be shared. The more I can sell stateside to people who know the difference, the more I can buy from those whose worthy hands to continue the fight for openness and equality, a fight that I've taken to the world wide web.

Your support ensures that films for women will make a difference.

The Vagina Cafe hosts a presentation for women inspired by photos taken in Afghanistan, dealing with the different cultural norms that women in either society face.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

THE DISAPPEARING WOMAN, THE DISAPPEARING MAN...Pointer

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Hope Symbols

Love and hope. I say the words and I still wonder what it means.

I think of all the images, the poems, the quotes, the songs, the stories. The symbols.

I think of my own work, the Fiction Corpus, which I tested and analyzed because I too wanted to know what it was about. Sure enough, the words love and hope were two of the most frequent words I had used.

Clearly love and hope are a potent fuel. They've driven many a work of art. The've helped create many beautiful things. Maybe that's it.

Use of Hope in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Who knows?"

"I hope it's not before August."

Verses 971-972 from the chapter called Bohemia

"It means," said Jesus, "that the Devil bides with hope that faith and love will die. Fear not. Be as patient as he is."

Verse 102 from the chapter called Vows

"Professionals." Your father smiled.

"I hope you don't mind," said Columbus.

"No, of course not."

Verses 553-555 from the chapter called Adolescence

From my seat in the middle of the booth, my view was unobstructed. I was gazing upon divine grace: the ultimate of mortal gifts - penultimate Gift! purest Womanhood! I was looking at Man's consternation, his pride, his instrument in Man's quest to be like God: to create! to love! to hold! But I did not yet know it. I was blinded by honor's undignified lust for vengeance. I sought my own brand of justice in that choked and choking room of self-conscious amusement, otioseness, and strife. I wanted to conquer, my child, not love. I looked upon that lovely figure with calculated intentions. I did not see her loveliness; I ignored her life, her needs, her desires, her hopes and dreams - they were unimportant. I saw myself and my own needs only, no matter what I claimed or thought I felt. I was not unimpaired; I was drunk: impatient: rushed by my own winds - not what I considered - and seriously so - to be the winds of destiny. Those were only breezes, unpredictable movements of air: the erratic impulses produced by circumstances in the landscape; they were not to be trusted. They were only whisperings - and if destiny had anything to do with them, they were only destiny's advances: wafting forward ideas and intimations, proposals, and the probability of misapprehension.

Verse 432 from the chapter called Bohemia

Jesus would never have dreamed it would be like that. He was always full of hope! His mother was dead: he was full of hope! He took out the picture of his mother he always carried; he cried. Weeping like a newborn child, he cried for his mother. He tore out his fine hair like a young widower. He beat his head against the wall and then he smiled: he praised God for His wisdom.

Verse 74 from the chapter called Adolescence

Use of Hope in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Luka was beginning to lose whatever sliver of hope he once enjoyed, and, now that panic was transforming into dread, he began to wonder what they would do to him: what manner of torture they would choose to employ: what kind of pain they could possibly inflict: what sort of diabolical violation of his body could they possibly imagine?

And then, she was there: on the side of the road about to cross in front of him - but, seeing the rapidly approaching vehicle, she hesitated.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraphs 14-15

I hope that I have somehow conveyed the nature of these experiences. But they are so diverse, and the only common element is this feeling in my loins that I can hardly begin to describe. And I have felt it around you many times. But around you, I don't usually employ my imagination. The most powerful experience I had with you came very simply.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-5

ANDY: Well, that's too bad: I came here for some roast beef and I'm going to get it.

WAI: Good evening, gentlemen. What would you like to drink?

ANDY: Do you have a clean potato vodka?

WAI: I'll have to check.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 1, Love, Hope, Desire and Suspicion, Paragraphs 27-30

At least I hope to have reminded you of the circumstances under which your relationship with the 'Romaniac' began. It has been a long relationship, but oftentimes quiet and distant, and only recently, I gather, have you had the opportunity to develop it seriously. But I never doubted that it would be provocative: everything about that woman is that way, whether it be innocent or not, and your confessions to me have only piqued an already heightened interest.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 8, Clauses 7-10

Now there is only so much I can do: I am trying to point you in the right direction. It is my belief that Indiana was infected many years ago, when you were still a child on the shores of Lake Ontario. You are not to blame; but you are no longer a child, and the first thing we must accept is that this sort of thing is indeed a verruca vulgaris: it is a common affliction, as pervasive in society as in the bodies of those infected. Nevertheless, each man must face his own feelings first, and alone; but when you do, remember: it is a thirsty saturation: these feelings; you will not satisfy yourself by slowly and meticulously draining them. You must drown them, and sincerely hope that they will eventually wash away.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 3

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

Junior bought a professional hip adduction machine. Within days, Harry Connick had mastered it. Junior attached ropes to his feet. Nyota pulled one way; Ann Taylor, the other. The mild-mannered accountant made both women fall forward. "Sorry," he said. "I-uh-I hope you ladies didn't bruise your knees."

Patsy unfastened his pants. Ever so carefully, he wiggled them down. Next came his shorts. As much as they would burn, his cheeks had to provide traction. With the smell of burning flesh already seeming to fill his nostrils, Patsy clutched either side of his collar and gently inched back his fingers. Supporting more of his weight on the fabric was dangerous but unavoidable. He could only hope he reached the loop in time.

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring international cooperation

Nike closed the door. "Welcome to the back seat of my car. I hope you find it comfortable." He turned on the interior light. "Where would you like to go?" Silence. "How about the Reine? Driver, take us to the Alley of the Daisy Queen-the scenic route." Luka turned on the engine. He put the car in gear. They drove.

"What's your name?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring the streets of Paris

"I didn't want you to fall in front of the villagers. You want to impress them. If I had taken you straight into the desert, you might have been thrown onto the sand. I might not have heard you. The last thing you would have seen before dying of exposure would have been a camel's toe. Is that what you want? To almost make it?"

"You're right," said Clark. "I'm not a ladies' man. I'm comfortable in groups. I split bills. I sweat. I iron my socks."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring hopeless people

"No wonder Indra is offended," said Gog. "Sargon takes upon himself the mantle of the most high. He is possessed by the aka mainyu [i.e., to ancient Iranians, the spirit of evil]. We have no choice but to appease the Asha [i.e., righteousness personified]. Our people have been selected for this duty. They will follow the sea to the mountains. They will raid and plunder the lands of Sargon.

Use of Hope in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(LESBIAN tries to comfort MS. JACKSON.)

MS. JACKSON: Don't touch me! Oh, my God: I'm sorry, Homo. Please forgive me. I'm beside myself.

LESBIAN: What can I do?

MS. JACKSON: There's nothing you can do. I married a miscreant; I gave birth to a rogue; I brought a Jezebel into my employment!

LESBIAN: Calm down.

MS. JACKSON: How can I be calm when my family is having an orgy in my kitchen?

LESBIAN: I'll put a stop to this.

MS. JACKSON: Homo, I'm ruined. I'm finished. I'll never be respected again.

LESBIAN: Not if I have anything to do with it.

MS. JACKSON: What are you going to do?

– ACT I, lines 1027-1035

LESBIAN: It's a tiny bug that invades trees and makes them grow abnormal clumps of tissue. It doesn't have to be a tree. I remember my mother's rose-hedge suffering from gall. I had absolutely no idea what it was. I thought it was some kind of strange flower. It started growing these round, fluffy balls of blood-red fiber. I thought it was gorgeous. It has its own name - a beautiful one. It's known as Robin's pincushion.

MS. JACKSON: Oh, Heavens! My pincushion: it's still missing. I'm sorry, Homo. I didn't mean to interrupt.

LESBIAN: It's not a problem.

MS. JACKSON: I don't understand. Who could've taken it?

LESBIAN: Somebody close to you.

MS. JACKSON: Who?

LESBIAN: More importantly, why?

MS. JACKSON: It's only a pincushion.

LESBIAN: I thought it was more than that.

MS. JACKSON: To my family - not to anybody else.

– ACT I, lines 505-514

LUKE: Winna tee, winna tee.

Tee tee ta.

FLETCHER: What the devil was that?

LESBIAN: It's a haka dance developed by the Maori people of New Zealand. I didn't know Aussies could appreciate it.

LUKE: It's me old school chant - thanks to the junior rugby union.

GREY GOOSE: Your husband's been teaching it to me.

ALICE: That's what you do together. I thought you drank.

GREY GOOSE: Actually, I just challenged him to a drinking contest. He accepted.

LUKE: I'm not gonna let him drink with the flies, am I? Besides, he just challenged me.

MS. JACKSON: Go.

Use of Hope in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Pfizer wandered around the ground floor for a while. Aimless and distracted. He thought about hopping into a suit and swimming through the sky. In a few years it wouldn't be possible. The atmosphere was getting less dense. Pfizer hit himself in the head. Trivialities. It was the phosphane lions he had to worry about. Their habitat was disappearing. If he couldn't prove their indigenous nature they would never survive. Only his samples would remain. As long as some unscrupulous administrator didn't toss them out. Along with Pfizer's career.

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story in which all hope is absorbed even when it's traveling at light speed

On the fifth day I worked on my translation. Whenever I noticed something odd like a common idiom or a strange use of a word I considered it out loud. I started teaching grammar to an invisible class. My commentary attracted the interest of two village women. I caught them trying to look through the window. I invited them inside but they ran off. It occurred to me that there were many things in this world that might be of interest to an imaginary class.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes the mess we're in as a society, though hopefully you're one of those helping to clean it up

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge. He had no choice. At the time the ship was scheduled to be inspected by Star Alliance sanitation officers.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The following day the man came back. He asked me what I was talking to myself about and I told him I was mulling over current events. Politics in Moscow. He wanted to discuss it with me but I refused to talk to him unless he came inside. So he came inside. He said his name was Putin. Which I told him was similar to my own name Bongani. I asked him where his friend was and he told me that his friend had a lover. I told him I hoped he wouldn't say the same thing about me. We laughed over that. He left in good spirits.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by events that in some places were reported, though the details are fictional

As Mark made his way down to his final stop he noticed the professor standing behind the tripod leaning into the viewfinder. He was so preoccupied with the sight of the bent-over old man he neglected to slow down and crane his head around the hedgerow. Luckily there was nobody there. The cord that connected Bill's hand brake to the actual brake had snapped. He had been dragging it for about the entire route until a customer on Download Street finally stopped him and asked, "What's that noise?" Bill decided it was time to take a break and check it out. He didn't want customers thinking postmen didn't care about their trucks. The customer saw the broken cord. He offered to bring some twine so Bill could tie the loose end to the chassis. Bill said he didn't want to be a bother. The customer insisted. Bill was forced to wait ten minutes until the customer came back and said, "Sorry it took so long. Here's the twine." Bill tied the cord to the chassis and went on his way. Never realizing the broken hand brake had probably saved his life.

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
